John Fitzgerald Kennedy led the start of a new era in human history. He was born on May 29, 1917 in the small Boston suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts. He majored in government and international relations at Harvard University. In 1961 Kennedy served as President until his assassination in 1963. John F. Kennedy influenced and touched the lives of people everywhere through his efforts with the Apollo 11 space mission, the Cuban Missile Crisis, and the founding of the Peace Corps. Kennedy was influenced by his previous accomplishments, world conditions, and his brother’s untimely death. Before John F. Kennedy’s accomplishments he was a war hero. Kennedy thought, â€Å"’’ there’s nothing more important’ than getting the United States into a leading position in space’† (Kennedy 157, Logsdon 233). Although many think the Bay of Pigs invasion will not be recalled, Kennedy’s involvement in the Cuban Missile Crisis is what many remember him by. On October 16, 1962 a U.S. flight over Cuba revealed that the Soviet Union was in the process of positioning nuclear weapons on the island. For a week war seemed possible, but then the Soviet’s backed down and ordered the provoking missiles off the island. Before all this occurred, on April 17, 1961, Brigade 2506, composed of 1,400 Cuban exiles, attacked two beaches in the Bay of Pigs but was quickly crushed and 1,200 of the exiles were taken prisoner. â€Å"The months after the Cuban crisis showed significant progress toward his (Kennedy’s) goal of ‘a world of law and free choice, banishing the world of war and coercion’† (The White House 2). One of President Kennedy’s most enduring legacies is the Peace Corps. The Peace Corps was established to help impoverished countries in health, teaching, agriculture, urban planning, skilled trades, forestry, sanitation, and technology.
